Musk: SpaceX Engineering Data to Be Used in Training Grok AI Model
Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will feed its proprietary engineering data into the training of the next-generation Grok AI model, which is expected to reach 2 trillion parameters. Restricted data under ITAR will be excluded.
Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX will contribute its vast repository of engineering data to train the next-generation Grok large language model. In a post on X, Musk stated that SpaceX's “world-class engineering data” accumulated over decades will be used for supplemental training of Grok, with the exception of content restricted by U.S. arms export regulations.
This training run, which Musk referred to as the “2T run,” indicates a model scale of approximately 2 trillion parameters—nearly double the size of the currently shipping Grok 4.5. The restricted data pertains to technical information governed by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which controls the export of defense and space hardware-related technical data. This means core technologies linked to SpaceX's Merlin and Raptor engine propulsion systems, as well as rocket guidance and control systems, will not be used. However, manufacturing processes, materials science, and Starlink hardware design data are expected to be included.
When SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq in June, the company highlighted Grok and xAI's Colossus supercomputer as key components of its AI strategy to investors. Shortly after the IPO, SpaceX acquired AI coding startup Cursor in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion, giving xAI an enterprise software distribution channel and continuous access to real-world developer data for model training.
Grok 4.5, released on July 8, was already partially trained using data from Cursor. Musk said that Grok 4.5 is broadly comparable to Anthropic's Opus 4.7 in overall capability, but operates faster and at lower cost.
Using SpaceX engineering data for next-generation AI training aligns with Musk's long-standing strategy of data synergy across his companies. Tesla provides real-world driving data and manufacturing experience, X supplies massive conversational data, and now SpaceX contributes aerospace engineering data accumulated since its founding in 2002.
Musk has not announced an official release date for the new model, widely referred to as Grok 4.6. He previously indicated that the 2-trillion-parameter model is in its final training phase and is expected to complete this week.
