Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun Predicts AI Could Reduce Workweek to 3 Days at 2 Hours Daily
Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun, speaking as a National People's Congress deputy, suggests the AI era may fundamentally reshape work structures, potentially reducing the standard workweek to just three days with two-hour workdays. He emphasized embracing technological advancement with an open mindset while highlighting Xiaomi's 2026 roadmap for converging self-developed chips, OS, and AI models.
Beijing, March 7 — Lei Jun, founder and CEO of Xiaomi Corporation, has outlined a bold vision for the future of work in the artificial intelligence era, suggesting that traditional employment structures may become obsolete as technology advances.
In an interview with China Newsweek, the National People's Congress deputy predicted that AI could dramatically reduce working hours, potentially enabling a schedule of just three days per week with two-hour workdays. "Many rules will be rewritten in the AI era, while simultaneously creating numerous new positions," Lei stated, urging the public to embrace technological progress with an open mindset.
"Our quality of life and work quality will see substantial improvements," he added, contrasting this future with the current standard eight-hour, five-day workweek.
Lei's comments build upon his recent statements to CCTV on March 5, where he characterized the current period as a "major outbreak phase" for AI technology. He highlighted the transformative potential of AIOS (Artificial Intelligence Operating Systems) once fully developed, while stressing Xiaomi's commitment to technological innovation and product quality.
The remarks come as Xiaomi accelerates its technological self-sufficiency initiatives. At the company's 2025 "Ten Million Technology Award" ceremony, Lei disclosed ambitious 2026 targets: achieving convergence of self-developed chips, proprietary operating systems, and in-house AI large language models on a single terminal device. The company is also prioritizing advancement in robotics business development, which Lei described as a "new milestone" in Xiaomi's innovation history.
Industry observers note that Lei's projections align with broader discussions among tech leaders about AI's labor market implications, though the timeline for such radical workplace transformation remains speculative.
