Google Expands AI Mandate Beyond Engineers to All Employees
Google is intensifying its push for universal AI adoption across the company, extending requirements beyond software engineers to include non-technical staff. The company has notified certain employees that AI usage will become a key component of their 2026 performance evaluations, marking the next phase of AI integration into daily operations.
Google is dramatically expanding its artificial intelligence adoption requirements, moving beyond software engineers to mandate AI usage across all employee categories. The tech giant is now requiring non-technical staff to integrate AI tools into their daily workflows, with some employees facing performance evaluation consequences if they fail to comply.
According to four知情人士透露, Google management has recently notified certain non-technical employees that AI tool usage is now mandatory in their daily work. In some cases, AI adoption metrics will serve as significant factors in this year's performance assessments.
This initiative represents Google's next major step in embedding AI throughout its entire organizational structure. The company previously formalized AI usage as a core responsibility for software engineers, with management noting that an increasing proportion of code is now being generated by AI systems.
Google is not alone in this approach. Meta has informed employees that their 2026 performance reviews will measure their "AI-driven impact," while Microsoft has explicitly stated that AI is no longer an optional tool.
Different roles carry varying AI usage requirements. Engineers are expected to utilize AI programming assistants for code generation and technical problem-solving, while non-technical staff must employ AI for drafting strategic documents, analyzing sales calls, and extracting customer insights. Some job descriptions have already been updated to reflect these requirements.
Two non-technical employees confirmed that management has made clear that AI usage will be incorporated into the GRAD (Googler Reviews and Development) performance evaluation system. Sales team members are required to use internal AI tools to record calls and generate notes, with some employees facing specific weekly usage targets. Additionally, AI proficiency expectations correlate with employee seniority levels.
A Google spokesperson stated that managers can evaluate employee performance based on AI usage patterns.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that some software engineers' performance metrics already include AI usage indicators. Google internally continues to raise AI adoption requirements. Engineering Vice President Megan Cachogalia sent an email to engineers clarifying that job responsibilities have been updated to include using AI for solving programming problems.
Google CFO Anat Ashkenazi noted that in Q4 2025, approximately 50% of code was generated by AI and reviewed by engineers, while CEO Sundar Pichai stated in April that this figure had exceeded 30%.
Google employees typically use internal AI tools for security purposes. For example, "Duckie," an internal version of Gemini, can answer questions based on company internal documents. Another tool, "Goose," is an AI programming tool trained on Google's technical history. These tools enable employees to safely work with sensitive company information without泄密 concerns.
Google has also customized certain third-party AI tools internally. The Cloud sales team uses Yoodli, an AI virtual avatar tool that helps salespeople practice customer conversations before actual client interactions.
