China and Macau Win Two Golds at 2026 International Winter AI Olympiad
China and Macau secured two gold medals, one silver, and three excellence awards at the 2026 International Winter Artificial Intelligence Olympiad in Ljubljana, marking their debut at the UNESCO-backed competition.
Ljubljana, Slovenia — The 2026 International Winter Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (IAIO) concluded on February 27 in the Slovenian capital, with China and Macau making a historic debut by capturing two gold medals, one silver, and three excellence awards among the 95 competitors from 24 countries.
According to CCTV News, both the Chinese mainland and Macau teams participated in the high-level academic competition for the first time, each fielding four contestants. The host organization praised the exceptional performance of the Chinese competitors, offering high accolades and congratulations for their achievements.
The IAIO, headquartered in Slovenia and organized by the International Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at the Jožef Stefan Institute, has earned endorsement from UNESCO as a premier global platform for youth AI talent. This year's event marked the competition's second edition, following its inaugural session held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in autumn 2024.
The 2026 Olympiad emphasizes the cultivation of next-generation AI professionals who combine technical excellence with ethical responsibility. The competition challenges participants to demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical applications, specifically requiring solutions to environmental and social problems through a human-centric, socially responsible lens.
The event drew support from leading figures in artificial intelligence research, including UC Berkeley professor Stuart Russell, University of Copenhagen professor Serge Belongie, University of the Witwatersrand professor Benjamin Rosman, and Umeå University professor Virginia Dignum, alongside 15 UNESCO Chair professors. Amazon Web Services (AWS) served as the main sponsor for this year's competition.
The strong showing by the Chinese and Macanese teams highlights the region's growing prominence in international STEM education and AI development, aligning with the IAIO's mission to foster technically skilled practitioners committed to ethical AI innovation.
